Morphing wing UAV (link to article at Flightglobal.com)
In-flight tests of a shape-changing wing were carried out by Lockheed Martin and NextGen using a subscale remotely piloted vehicle called the MFX-1. Wing area/span changes of 40 – 30 % corresponding with sweep sweep changes 15 – 35° were realised in flight at speeds of 100kt (185km/h). Work is carried out as part of the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) morphing aircraft structures programme. Fast morphing is part of the study while having the flight-control system keep up.
